Summary: Research Statement: Contemporary industrial developments and rapid pace of urbanization have called for eco-benign, sustainable energy sources and high value products for the betterment of human society. My research strives to bring closer the goal of bioconversion of weed lignocellulose- wild sugarcane (Saccharum spontaneum) and de-oiled rice bran (left over residue after extraction of oil) into motor fuel ethanol by using the cellulolytic enzyme cocktail from Aspergillus oryzae for depolymerisation of complex carbohydrates into fermentable monomeric constitutents and subsequently fermentation of these into ethanol by thermotolerant S. cerevisiae VS3 and xylose metabolizing yeast- Pichia stipitis NCIM 3499 under a battery of fermentation techniques. My focus is to achieve first maximum sugar recovery from the substrates by deploying chemical and enzymatic mediated process and eventually ethanol production with utmost yields and productivities. I foresee the commercialization of this technology in many critical facets of todays economics trends and perspectives. My long-term plan is to make the successful lignocellulose conversion into value-added products, primarily by bridging the gap between research laboratories to industries understanding the fundamental principles of commercialization of biotechnology.
